What makes a professional interpreter?

Being bi-lingual is only one part of what makes a proficient interpreter, although a very essential one. Other than powerful proficiency in the two languages in question, an interpreter also needs to have superb analytical thinking, intuition, cultural awareness. They also need to be well-versed with the proper use of the technical tools involved in the interpretation process such as microphones and sound engineering devices.

What are the challenges of interpretation?

In a general sense, the 3 main challenges of interpretation services are:

1. Technical challenges

As a rule of thumb, an interpreter cannot interpret what they cannot hear. Technical problems such as microphone malfunctioning, or inaudible speech can hinder the interpreter’s ability to accomplish their task.

2. Cultural barriers

A seasoned interpreter’s job is not merely about understanding the speech and delivering it successfully in the target language. It also requires a keen sense of cultural awareness, regional slang, and idioms. This also includes sophisticated figures of speech such as jokes and proverbs.

3. Lack of sufficient preparation

Usually, interpreters need to study the material they will be interpreting thoroughly before the actual event. Lack of proper preparation can often require interpreters to improvise, which may make their job all the more stressful.
